Why is servicing your car important and how’s it different to an MOT?

A lot of people only think about car maintenance when their MOT is coming up. The vehicle passes and you feel relieved (and then another year rolls by). But this is where regular servicing is useful, it will pick up any issues in between MOTs that can quietly worsen if left unchecked.

An MOT checks that your car is roadworthy and meets legal safety and emissions standards. This includes inspecting things like:

    • Brakes and brake performance

    • Tyres and tread depth

    • Lights and indicators

    • Steering and suspension

    • Seatbelts

    • Exhaust and emissions

It checks the vehicle's safety at the time of the test. If everything meets the requirements, your car passes.

An MOT doesn’t maintain your vehicle though. Fluids and oils aren't topped up, filters aren’t replaced and the battery doesn’t go through a full health-check. Some things in your car may be slightly worn but not yet dangerous. An MOT passes your car in that moment, but it’s not a guarantee that something won’t need attention before your next test in a year’s time.

During a service, we look at the overall health of your car. This includes changing engine oil and filters, topping up and checking essential fluids, inspecting brakes and generally looking for early signs of wear or developing faults. Small issues can be picked up before they turn into bigger, more expensive repairs. Keeping on top of servicing also helps your car run more efficiently and can extend its lifespan.

As we’re crawling out of winter, it’s a great time to have your car checked properly. Cold weather and salted roads full of potholes take their toll. Batteries can quickly weaken and your brakes and suspension components suffer extra wear and corrosion. A service means that we can find any damage for you early, before it worsens.

We currently offer 50% off your MOT when booked alongside a service - find out more about the two service types we offer.
